PMI Volunteers don’t just manage projects — they shape communities, restore hope, and leave the world better than they found it..!
On 20 September 2025, the PMI Chennai Chapter, in collaboration with SWOTT and Namma Marina Namma Perumai, successfully organized the International Coastal Clean-Up Drive at Marina Beach, opposite Vivekananda House. The initiative was part of a global movement observed in more than 100 countries, aimed at protecting oceans and coastlines from the ever-growing menace of pollution.

The morning set the tone for what would become a shining example of volunteer commitment. Despite heavy rainfall in the city, volunteers arrived on time at the registration desk, ready to serve. The drizzle that accompanied the early hours could not dampen the spirit of those gathered; rather, it amplified the sense of solidarity. Equipped with safety kits and refreshments, volunteers worked tirelessly across Marina’s long shoreline to remove plastic bottles, food wrappers, discarded fishing nets, and other waste that otherwise would have polluted the ocean. Their resilience and punctuality became the foundation of this event’s success.

This initiative directly aligns with SDG 14: Life Below Water, which aims to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources.” By cleaning up plastic waste from Marina Beach and raising awareness, our volunteers contributed to protecting marine ecosystems and building momentum for long-term environmental responsibility.
It also indirectly supports SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by promoting cleaner public spaces, and SDG 13: Climate Action by addressing human-driven threats to natural ecosystems.

The success of the event can be seen on multiple levels. On a practical front, a significant quantity of waste was cleared from the beach, leaving behind a visibly cleaner and healthier stretch of coast. But more importantly, the event created a ripple effect of awareness among citizens. Many first-time participants acknowledged that the experience changed their perspective on daily consumption and disposal habits. Students spoke about how picking up plastic from the sand helped them understand the interconnectedness between lifestyle choices and environmental outcomes. The clean-up became a living classroom, bridging knowledge with action.

The impact on society extends well beyond the morning of the clean-up. By inspiring 100+ volunteers to act as ambassadors of sustainability, PMI Chennai contributed to building a culture of environmental responsibility. Each participant became a messenger of change within their families, neighborhoods, and workplaces. This ripple effect is what transforms a single beach clean-up into a societal movement—an awakening that responsibility for our planet lies in collective hands.
In essence, the International Coastal Clean-Up Drive demonstrated that true transformation is possible when intent, discipline, and unity converge. The rain could not wash away the determination of PMI volunteers; instead, it became a backdrop for resilience.
The event reaffirmed that protecting our environment is not just a project—it is a lifelong mission. PMI Chennai Chapter extends heartfelt gratitude to every volunteer whose dedication made this initiative possible.
This endeavour reaffirmed something fundamental: that collective resolve, rooted compassion and punctuality, can restore not just our coastline—but our hope.
"To every volunteer who braved the rain, arrived on time, and willingly got their hands dirty for the sake of something greater: Thank you - Your dedication echoes long after the tide recedes..!"
